I’m one of the hahaha…I was in a class where we had to make up a word out of letters and numbers (forget the correct word for it) and it was what I came up with and when I got a email address it was what I came up with…guilty…

I am like you mandy. Why does “ilovejesus@…com” bother me so much more than “ilove49ers@….com” or whatever? I think for me it goes back to jr. high and high school years. Growing up in the late 80s and 90s, everyone had Christian T-shirts, christian bumper stickers, powerbands (leather bracelets with the colored beads that spelled out the plan of salvation), and soon came the fish on the back of the cars (of which I had on my 91 Chevy pickup), and the WWJD bracelets, then FROG, then PUSH, then… It even went so far as to marketing “TestaMINTS” the Christian breath mints. One day it hit me. I’ve never met one person who’s been saved or professed Christ because of a t-shirt or bumper sticker they read. However, we have done a lot of damage by living out an inconsistent faith while wearing a consistent arsenal of Christian paraphernalia (sp?).

So to me, the “ilovejesus@….com”s of the world are the next step which incorporates technology into a snowballing progression.

I do agree with CJ, though, that for some people, it’s an outward expression of a sense of determination–a reminder of who they are in Christ and logically a reminder to everyone else. I’m a believer that if we can’t speak something, we can’t live it out. I’m sure there are some sincere fighters for the faith with an “ilovejesus” email address who made my cheese scale go off the charts because I assumed their email address was rooted in one of the more unpleaseant aspects of modern Christianity. Hopefully, my discomfort with that will never cause me to judge them as a person.

Good points, Nick. Why does ilovejesus@domainname make us feel so much differently than ilove49ers@domainname? Because it’s so much more personal and controversial – we distance ourselves for the sake of self preservation? Is it because we don’t want to be reminded of our luke warm faith? (NOT that cheesy ID = on fire for God! Totally not what I’m saying! Just that being reminded of shortcomings in any way isn’t fun.) Could it be that any discomfort we have from these Christ inspired IDs may come from being intimidated by the person’s boldness? Perhaps we misunderstand their confidence and hope in Christ for immaturity.
Hmm…I think I’ve gotten a bit off track here, you were looking for funny screen names. But maybe someone will find this rabbit trail thought provoking…

I agree with you Nick…I don’t think this conversation is limited to Christians and their choice for identification. It probably applies to other passions as well (e.g., sports, music, schools, etc.). I was just poking fun at the Christian IDs namely because I’m a Christian as well and thought it would be healthy to laugh at ourselves.

I think overzealous people in any area of passion are fun to consider…maybe, we should start discussing other areas of passion as well.

I’m a Christian, but I still get annoyed when I see names like that. I feel like it’s someone trying to be all showy with their faith. “I’m Christian, lookit me!!” To me, it’s not a profession of faith… it’s obnoxious. A got an email from an acquaintance I met at a conference and I wanted to gag when I found an email from “HisChild(lastname)” in my inbox. But hey… to each their own, I suppose.

I think some people who choose names like this grow up in more of a sheltered environment and it is more about thinking that it is cool then trying to scream their faith at people. They are usually strong believers in their faith and it is something they identify with, such as some people will use names like yankeesfan@domainname.com

I am a Christian and I don’t like the Christian fish on the cars and stuff like that, I believe Christians should live out what they believe versus just saying it as an identity and many times not living it out. But as cheesy as it is, I don’t see too much of a big deal with it when other people use names they identify with whether it is with a sports team or some other group or organization. I totally disagree with names like “yourgoingtohellimnot” – that is just stupid.

Is it just the cheesy ones that bother you, or any screen name that identifies with the Christian faith? Just curious the distinction when it comes to Christian names.
