We kicked off a new series at our church (New Hope) today for Christmas entitled, “Advent Conspiracy“. Advent Conspiracy is a world-wide movement of individuals and churches that seeks to recapture the meaning and power of Christmas. The following is stated on Advent Conspiracy’s website:

The story of Christ’s birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.

So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.

And when it’s all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

Advent Conspiracy is a four-part series for the month of December that centers around the following key concepts that can reconnect us to the purpose behind Christmas:

  • Worship Fully
  • Spend Less
  • Give More
  • Love All

This week’s message entitled “Worship Fully” explores the consumptive nature of our culture and its impact on one’s faith in God. Our cultural conditioning for consumption, especially during the holidays, may become a formidable obstacle to our ability to fully worship God. In fact, I make a case in this message that it is quite possible to approach God in a consumptive manner.

@charlestlee We are doing a similar thing at our church. @johnfehlen is encouraging us to go “simple” this season.

  3. Charles — Our community just finished our first Advent Conspiracy (we started a little early to give our college students to participate before they left for winter break). It has had a profound impact on how many of us are expressing our worship of God this year and has encouraged us to give thoughtful, beautiful gifts as a reflection of the incarnation of Christ.

This year, 100% of our AC offering went to support Living Water International and Project Agape, an education/job training/anti-slavery initiative in Chennai, India led by Justice Ventures International.

  4. Great to hear Daniel! I love the simplicity and scalability of AC’s approach. Glad to hear that it impacted your community.
